Central Texas Electric Cooperative is warning members about a recent phone scam involving someone falsely claiming to represent CTEC.
A member received a call stating that her electric account was past due and would be disconnected unless she made an immediate payment. The caller provided account information and sent three barcodes by text message, instructing her to make three separate $500 payments. Unfortunately, the member lost a total of $1,500.
CTEC will never demand payment through a barcode sent by text message.
Scammers often use threats of immediate disconnection to create fear and pressure members into acting quickly. They may also have access to personal or account information, making the call appear legitimate. Caller ID information can be manipulated, so the number displayed on your phone should not be trusted as proof that a call is from CTEC.
If you receive a suspicious call:
- Do not provide personal, account or payment information.
- Do not use a barcode or payment link sent by text.
- Hang up without following the caller’s instructions.
- Contact CTEC directly at 1-800-900-2832 to verify your account status.
- If you have already made a payment to a suspected scammer, contact local law enforcement immediately.
Please share this warning with family members, friends, employees and neighbors. Scammers rely on fear and urgency. When in doubt, hang up and contact CTEC directly using our official phone number.
