Position: Groundman/Lineman Helper
Reports to: District Operations Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

 

Position Summary:
 

Provide assistance to linemen and other line personnel in connection with the construction, maintenance, service, and repair of the electrical system.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists linemen, as instructed, in the preparation, construction, replacement, and maintenance of electric distribution lines, structures, and equipment.
  2. Perform manual labor type tasks such as assisting in loading and unloading poles, digging and tamping pole holes, setting and removing poles, cleaning vehicles, loading materials, digging ditches, and cutting brush.
  3. Operate vehicles and heavy equipment including line trucks, boom trucks, underground trencher, and digger truck, and other associated equipment in a safe and proficient manner.
  4. Anticipate linemen’s needs and supply them with proper tools, equipment, and materials, commonly through the use of a handline.
  5. Set up and remove barricades, flags, and signs for traffic control and work zone protection in compliance with safety procedures.
  6. Ensures all tools, equipment, and unused materials are returned and replaced on the line truck after the completion of a job or the day’s work.
  7. Operate and maintain transportation equipment, tools, and working equipment in proper condition, and report deficiencies or repairs needed.
  8. Responsible for compliance with the Cooperative's safety rules, safety policies, and safety procedures.
  9. Must be able to report to work within 20 minutes of being notified that services are required when performing on-call duties.
  10. In addition to these responsibilities, may be assigned by the District Operations Supervisor or Foreman to perform other duties from time to time.

 

Education:
High school diploma or equivalency is required.

 

Experience:
Previous experience working with electrical systems preferred.

 

Job Knowledge:
Prior construction and electrical knowledge and abilities preferred, but not required.

 

Abilities and Skills:

  1. Must possess valid Texas driver license with good driving record.
  2. Must possess a valid Texas Class A CDL license with good driving record, or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  3. Must be able to communicate in English, both in written and oral forms with the general public and co-workers.
  4. Must be able to lift/move 100 pounds or more, as necessary without external assistance of personnel or mechanical aids.
  5. Must be able to operate or learn to operate equipment including bucket trucks, digger trucks, chainsaws, and other related equipment.
  6. Must be able to perform manual digging with a pick and shovel.
  7. Must be able to walk distances up to one mile in uneven terrain.
  8. Must be able to effectively utilize a two-way radio to communicate duties and location.
  9. Must be able to tie knots, rig blocks, and frame poles per specifications.
  10. Must have sight to be able to see working conditions from a safety standpoint.

 

Working Environment:
The majority of the work schedule will be performed outdoors at various field locations within
the service territory each day. Must be willing to work in all adverse and inclement weather
conditions, including help with service restoration during storms. Overtime may be required at
times of heavy workload. Must be able to serve on-call duty on a rotation basis.
